Balanchine

Balanchine

The Ballet Maker

by Robert Gottlieb

“Balanchine the artist comes suddenly and immediately alive in Mr. Gottlieb’s graceful description.” —New York Times

George Balanchine, the great choreographer, summed up everything that preceded him in ballet and then reinvented it. He extended the art form into radical, yet inevitable, new paths. This gorgeous and intimate biography chronicles Balanchine’s life and achievements. By the time of his death in 1983, Balanchine had become a giant, recognized as a member of the triad of modern masters alongside Picasso and Stravinsky. Robert Gottlieb offers a personal portrait that draws on a knowledge of ballet history acquired over a lifetime of passionate study.

“A graceful little book, a twirl into the world of George Balanchine.” —Washington Post Book World

“I’d recommend Gottlieb’s book for its authority, completeness and articulate excellence.” —New York Times Book Review

“Admirable. . . . Gottlieb breaks new ground … [and] in a few swift strokes, gives us the glory and the tragedy.” —Dance Magazine
